Short history: The beginnings of unitarianism in Debrecen go back to the person of Szabó József „who, knowing the Unitarian faith, converted to it, when beside him only 2 or 3 Unitarians lived in Denrecen. In his will, dated November 16, 1887, he donated the property ar Hatvan Street no. 24, and land to be used for Unitarian purposes and to build a church. After World War I, many Unitarians emigrated from Transylvania to Hungary, and some settled in Debrecen, too. These Unitarians founded the Unitarian church in Debrecen, also inspired by Józan Miklós, vicar, who visited Debrecen to encourage the Unitarians. The church was build in 1928. The congregation was led by its president and the church board. Until 1940, ministers from Budapest, especially from the Mission House, supplied Debrecen. The first regular minister, Ferenc József was posted to Debrecen, but commuted from Budapest during the World War II. The next minister did move to Debrecen. He was Buzogány Kálmán, who served between 1945 and 1951. In 1951-52 the substituting minister was Szolga Ferenc. János Szász served 1952-1960. After he left, in 1961 the substituting minister was Kelemen Miklós from Füzesgyarmat. Until 1968, other substituting ministers held the Sunday services in Debrecen. Bajor János was the minister between 1968, until his death in 1998. During Bajor’s last two years, because of his illness, Rázmány Csaba served from Petszentlörinc. Kiss Mihály from Hódmezővásárhely served in Debrecen during 1999-2000. Between 2000-2007 the minister was, Miklósi-Vári Katalin. The new minister from first of March 2008 is Pap Gy. László.
