The city of Debrecen, being the "Calvinist Rome" from the begining of the Hungarian Reformation, had been the center of trinitarian - antitrinitarian polemies too. Being close to the Transylvanian border the Unitarians appeared regullary. There was always a small group of people who preferred to praise God without dogmas, and they found a home in the Unitarian church. In the end of the 19th century a reformed man converted to the Unitarianism and from that time his house became the meeting place.
In spite of the fact that before the Second World War there was no minister in the congregation, they built the chapel. A Unitarian teacher had become the spiritual leader and he attracted more and more tradesmen, mostly from the Calvinist Church, but some of them came from rural Unitarian congregations in Transylvania.
NOW! The congregation in the course of the past twenty years has totally changed. Out of a traditional spiritual group grew an intellectual group, made up mostly of science professors from the University. The Debrecen Unitarian Congregation is unique in the Hungarian Unitarian palette, being more a humanist community than traditional. Our aim is to develop the dialogue between Science and Religion. Therefore we are open to newest researches from all over the world, which proves our conviction that there is a common language for science and religious beliefs. To enlarge our possibilities we follow the English, French, Spanish and German periodicals. Most of us speak at least one of these languages.
We are seeking for a Unitarian partner church in North America!
